Roland Synthesizers and the Boss TB303

 

Founded in 1972 by Ikutaro Kakehashi, Rolands first product was the TR77 Rhythm box followed in 1973 by their (and Japan's) first synth, the SH1000 which offered 10 presets and a limited range of user adjustable parameters. It was ,however, reasonably priced compared to Moogs and ARPs around at the time so it sold well. This was quickly followed by the SH3 - a far more powerful instrument more in keeping with other synths around at the time. In 1976 Roland produced the mighty  System 700 modular system and introduced the first Boss effects pedal.

 

Perhaps their most significant synth was the Jupiter 8, their first truely professional keyboard - a veritable powerhouse which helped define the sound of the electro pop revolution in the 80's. The TB303, part of their Boss range, is still a much sought after piece of kit. Capable of producing punchy, repetitive bass lines and grooves, it formed the back bone of stlyles like House, Acid, Trance and Ambient. If you spot either of these for sale, snap them up quick!!
