Sequential Cicuits and the Prophet 5
Sequential Circuits were founded in the early 1970’s in
California . They introduced their first synthesizer in 1978, and it was a classic – The Prophet 5, the first affordable, fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer. Designed, programmed by Dave Smith in just 8 months using full microprocessor control with low-cost synthesizer module chips, the five voice poly featured a patching storing system which let the user program and recall up to 100 different sound by the click of a couple of buttons. The Prophet 5 came out of the blue and set the standard for polyphonic synths.
In 1980 they produced the Prophet 10, effectively a dual manual Prophet 5 with a digital sequencer. This was followed by the highly successful monophonic Pro 1, and then by the Prophet 600 in 1982, their first
MIDI synth. The Prophet-T8 (1983) featured a 76-note weighted, wooden, velocity and aftertouch-sensitive keyboard. Another ground breaking instrument was the Six-Trak (1983). Equipped with
MIDI and an on-board six-track digital sequencer, it was one of the first multi-timbral synthesizers. The Drum machines; the Drum-Traks and the Tom and in late 1985, the Prophet-2000 sampler was released, and in early 1986, Sequential's only digital synthesizer, the Prophet VS vector synthesizer, was released. Sequentials final instrument was Studio 440, a combined a sampler and a sequencer, music composition workstation. The company went out of business in 1987 whilst developing the Prophet 3000 16-bit sampler. Yamaha bought Sequential out and sold the few completed 3000’s at knock down prices.
